Visit The Mighty Victoria Falls

Posted on Wed April 24, 2019.

Locals call it “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, the smoke that thunders, because of the waterfall’s continuous roaring and ever-present spray. The Victoria Falls, one of Africa’s iconic images, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just the sheer might of seeing it in person will blow your mind. It’s a bucket list item, for sure!

Access to the Falls

Victoria Falls has become a well-known tourist hub in Southern Africa. Tourists from around the world flock to the towns on both the Zambian and the Zimbabwean side of the falls to view the majestic waterfall. The Zimbabwean side however is most popular because about 80% of the falls can be seen from this side; the better viewing from the town of Victoria Falls will leave you breathless (and slightly damp!). Whether you’re gazing down into the churning chasm below or standing on the historic bridge just south of the Falls with one foot in each country, it’s a heart-stopping experience.

The best time to visit:

The best time to visit the Victoria Falls is from February to May. This is shortly after the region’s summer rain and you will get to see the world’s largest waterfall flowing at its highest volume. Visiting the falls during this (peak) season, engages all your senses and combines the thundering noise with a unique micro-climate of summer heat and moisture that comes together to produce one of nature’s most majestic sights.

Different ways to experience the Falls

From above: The ultimate way to get to see the most of the Falls and experience the 1700m curtain of water is from above. It is an amazing journey that allows passengers to witness the magnificent Falls in all its glory from many different angles. In a helicopter! Quite fittingly called the “Flight of Angels”, it treats you with 4 circuits over the falls, two on each side.

From below: Being the undisputed adventure capital of Africa, Victoria Falls provide a wide variety of water-based activities from which to choose. The many different adventure activities on offer will leave you pumping adrenaline and wanting more. For adventure enthusiasts we highly recommend doing at least one of the following activities on offer:

  • White water rafting: Raft along the curtain of water in the domain of the Nyaminyami, the River God of the Tonga people.
  • Gorge swing:Tumble 70m in a free-fall off the edge taking the biggest swing of your life.
  • Flying fox: Get clipped into a harness and shoot 125m high through the canyon.
